According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the percentage of people age 65 and older in the United States with Alzheimer’s Dementia is rising. In 2020, that number was 6.1%, and they are projecting that this number will increase to 8.5% in 2030 and that it will be at 11.2% by 2040. Couple that with the fact that statistics continue to show that America’s population is getting older – our median age continues to rise – and we can see the increasing importance of helping those who are impacted by Alzheimer’s Dementia.

At LTPL, we would like to enhance our services to these patrons, but we need input from the community. On August 11, we will be hosting a community conversation event here at both 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Attendees only need to come to one, though they are welcome to attend both. We will be seeking input from those who are affected by the disease, their loved ones, and others in the community who are interested in providing feedback. A representative from the Alzheimer’s Association will also be here to give a brief presentation and answer questions.

LTPL recently received a grant that will allow us to purchase new materials to better serve those in our community with disabilities, and the feedback that we are seeking from the public at this event will be valuable in deciding how best to spend these funds. If you want to learn more about how other communities have put this grant to use, click here to visit the American Library Association’s website for some case studies and perhaps some inspiration before attending the event.

LTPL wants to provide the materials and services that are most beneficial to our community, so we hope you can join us on August 11 – and perhaps even invite someone you know who may benefit from learning more.
