New Dyslexia Collection!

We are proud to announce that we now have a collection of youth print materials that are dyslexic friendly as well as three dyslexia kits for check-out. Dyslexia, or print-disabled, is a learning disability that makes reading and language-related tasks harder. It is estimated that it affects roughly 20% of the population and unfortunately, only 1 in 4 children with dyslexia get diagnosed.

The items in our collection range from picture books to early readers as well as novels and nonfiction titles. Features of these types of books include off-white paper, more spacing between lines as well as letters weighted differently to help make them easier to read and decode. Some of the books are written with specialized font, a unique typeface which makes words easier to read.
Another great resource is Libby! Did you know that Libby has dyslexia-friendly fonts? Once you borrow an eBook, you can simply adjust the font by selecting “OpenDyslexic” in Libby.

The dyslexia kits have a text-to-speech pen, which converts written text into spoken words, allowing the user to hear the text being read aloud. The kits also contain several guided reading strips and colored overlays which may help reduce visual stress and strengthen visual tracking skills.  Each kit contains a brochure explaining the contents of the bag and includes information on national resources that parents may find helpful.
